Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago in the southernmost point of South America.  Ushuaia is the capital city of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and a gateway to Antarctica.  Ushuaia, situated along the Bay of Ushuaia, on the shores of the Beagle Channel, is surrounded by the Martial Mountains.  The architecture of Ushuaia reflects colonial influences and the region’s extreme climate.  Ushuaia is a historic settlement, a thriving adventure destination and a primary base for expedition cruises to Antarctica.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Argentina, a country in South America, is blessed with magnificent landscapes and natural wonders.  The Andes Mountains, located along the western border of Argentina, are a natural border with Chile.  Patagonia, an expansive region in southern Argentina, is a land of pure wilderness.  Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago in the southernmost point of South America.  The western part of Tierra del Fuego belongs to Chile and the eastern part is a Province of Argentina, called Tierra del Fuego.  Ushuaia, the capital city of Tierra del Fuego, is a gateway to Antarctica and a wonderful adventure destination.  

Ushuaia and Places

Ushuaia, situated along the Bay of Ushuaia, on the shores of the Beagle Channel, is surrounded by the Martial Mountains.  We take a flight from Chile to Ushuaia on the way to Antarctica.  We join the guided excursion organized by the cruise ship to Tierra del Fuego National Park.  Part of the Tierra del Fuego Islands, it is a magnificent nature reserve overlooking mountains, forests and glacial lakes.  The coastal hiking trail runs along the Beagle Channel and offers panoramic views of the mountains. 

The Beagle Channel is a navigable waterway separating the larger Tierra del Fuego Islands from the smaller islands.  We take a catamaran cruise along the Beagle Channel to the Port of Ushuaia, observing nature and wildlife along the way.  The Port of Ushuaia is the embarkation and disembarkation point for our cruise to Antarctica.  We observe a number of cruise ships and fishing boats docked in the picturesque port. 

A short walk along the bay leads to the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia, a historic prison established in 1902.  It is a fascinating museum that highlights the history of the region.  The architecture of Ushuaia reflects colonial influences and the extreme weather conditions of the region.  The Parish Church of Ushuaia is an original church dating back to the 19th century.  Ushuaia is a historic settlement, a thriving adventure destination and a primary base for expedition cruises to Antarctica.
